Baseball’s Bigler, Castro Named All-SUNYAC

NEW PALTZ, NY — SUNY New Paltz senior Tom Bigler (Brewster, NY) and junior Silvester Castro (New York, NY) were both named to the All-State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) baseball team.

Bigler, a second-team selection, finished the season tied for first in homeruns (3), tied for second in doubles (7), and tied for third in RBI (17) on the team.

Bigler also ended the season with a .922 fielding percentage, committing just six errors in 32 games in centerfield.

In conference games, Bigler led the Hawks with a .395 average, 13 RBI, and a .711 slugging percentage.

Bigler played two seasons for New Paltz baseball, transferring in from Dean Junior College in the fall of 2001.

Castro, also a second-team selection, finished the 2003 season leading the Hawks in several offensive categories.

The Hudson Valley Community College transfer led the team in RBI (21), runs scored (26), triples (6), and slugging percentage (.588).

He was also tied with Bigler for homeruns (3), tied for second in batting average (.333), finished second on the squad in hits with 34, and had a .902 fielding percentage at shortstop.

SUNY New Paltz baseball finished 2003 with an 8-26 overall record and a 4-10 record in the SUNYAC.
