Utica Defeats New Paltz 7-0

FT. PIERCE, FL — Playing its third game of the day, the SUNY New Paltz baseball team ended its eight-game Florida trip with a 7-0 loss to Utica this evening.

The Hawks and Pioneers were making up a game that was postponed because of rain on Sunday (Mar. 16) night.

New Paltz, who had scored 21 runs in its first two games of the day, mustered just three hits against Utica’s Christopher Smith. Smith went the distance and struck out 13 to help the Pioneers (1-5) pick up their first win of the season.

Second baseman Jerry Sangiacomo led a nine-hit attack for Utica with two hits and three runs batted in.

Senior shortstop Randy Walters (Colliersville, TN) had two of the Hawks’ three hits. Freshman righthander Marc Smith (New City, NY) took the loss to drop to 0-2. In four innings, he gave five runs, four of which were earned, walked two and struck out six.

The Hawks fell to 3-8 with the loss.
