Swimming Standout Jon Amoia Wins 2003 James Fulton Award

NEW PALTZ, NY – — SUNY New Paltz men’s swimming standout Jon Amoia (Williamsville, NY) received the 2003 James Fulton Award at the SUNYAC Swimming & Diving Championship last weekend (Feb 13-15) in Buffalo, NY.

Since its inception in 1969, the award is given at the SUNYAC Championship to the male swimmer who combines athletic accomplishment with academic achievement over a four-year period.

At this year’s SUNYAC Championship, Amoia was a part of the New Paltz 200 medley relay team that repeated as conference champions. He also finished second in the 100 breaststroke and the 400 medley relay, fifth in the 200 freestyle relay and sixth in the 200 breaststroke. Amoia’s performance helped lead the Hawks to a third place finish at the conference championship for the second consecutive year.

As a junior in 2002, Amoia was the Most Valuable Swimmer at the SUNYAC Championship. He posted a national qualifying and conference record time of 57.98 to win the 100 breaststroke and was a part of the Hawks’ first place 200 medley relay team. He went on to swim in three events at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championship in Ohio.

Amoia has made an impact in the campus community as well. He is President of the student body, Vice President of Finance, a Dean’s List student, and a member of the SUNYAC All-Academic Team.

Amoia became the fourth New Paltz swimmer in the 35-year history of the award to be honored. He joined Paul Strothenke (1986), Mark Sargeant (1989) and Louis Petto (1994) as the other Hawks who have received the award.
