Oneonta Defeats New Paltz 90-88 in Overtime

NEW PALTZ, NY – — Senior guard Ben Davey (Andover, NJ) missed a three-point field goal as time expired in overtime and Oneonta came away with a 90-88 win over SUNY New Paltz this evening at Elting Gymnasium.

Trailing 90-85 with ten seconds remaining, Davey hit a three-pointer to pull the Hawks within two. On the ensuing possession, Oneonta turned the ball over to set up Davey’s opportunity for the game-winner.

New Paltz shot 50 percent from the field in the second half to erase a 14-point deficit. The Hawks (6-13, 4-7) cut the Red Dragons lead to three on a basket by junior forward Steve Ott (New Paltz, NY) with 14 minutes to play. Ott, who had 18 points and 10 rebounds, gave New Paltz their first lead of the game since the 17-minute mark in the first half on a basket five minutes remaining. The Hawks upped their lead to four, 77-73, on a three-point field goal by junior guard Jayvard Smith (Hempstead, NY) with 2:36 to play.

After Oneonta sank two free throws to make it a two-point game, junior forward Kurt Troyer (Albany, NY) hit a jumper with 35 seconds to play that sent the game into overtime.

Oneonta junior guard Shabron Bridges (Bronx, NY) led all scorers with 27 points. Troyer and junior guard Lesohn Reagans (New York, NY) each had 16 a piece for the Red Dragons who improved to 9-10 overall and 6-5 in the SUNYAC.

Smith led New Paltz with 19 points on 5-of-8 shooting from three-point range. The Hawks were 11-of-26 from three-point range for the game.
