Hawks Win Double Overtime Thriller at Brockport

BROCKPORT, NY – — The SUNY New Paltz men’s basketball team picked up its second straight conference win with an 85-82 double overtime win over Brockport this afternoon.

Sophomore forward Jonathan Towles (Jamaica, NY)put the Hawks ahead to stay at the 1:50 mark when he converted a three-point play to make it 83-80.

After the Golden Eagles (8-8, 3-4) cut the New Paltz lead to one with just under a minute remaining, a Hawks turnover gave Brockport a chance to win it. However, junior guard Jayvard Smith (Hempstead, NY) came up with a steal and hit two free throws with seven seconds left to secure the win.

Brockport built a five-point margin in the first two minutes of the first overtime, before New Paltz came back behind the play of senior guard Ben Davey who scored five straight points including a jumper with 20 seconds left to put the Hawks ahead 74-73. A Brockport offensive foul, gave New Paltz possession and two free throws by junior guard Dom Fornabaio (Wappingers Falls, NY) put the Hawks ahead 76-73. With time winding down, Brockport’s Bryan Boswell hit a desperation three-pointer to send the game into a second overtime period.

New Paltz junior guard Joe Bell (Albany, NY) hit a three-point field goal with just under two minutes remaining in regulation to tie the game at 64. Junior forward Steve Ott (New Paltz, NY) then put the Hawks ahead 66-64 on a layup with one minute to play. Brockport hit two free throws with under a minute remaining to force the overtime period.

Five Hawks scored in double figures. Towles led New Paltz with 21 points and 16 rebounds. Ott added 19 points and 16 rebounds. New Paltz is now 6-11 overall and 4-5 in the SUNYAC.
