New Paltz Women Fall in Conference Opener

NEW PALTZ — Senior center Kim Guenther (Lancaster, NY) scored 10 points and grabbed 13 redounds and junior forward Claire Crowley (Buffalo, NY) added 10 points to lead the Fredonia women’s basketball team to a 51-38 win over SUNY New Paltz this evening at Elting Gym. Fredonia (3-2, 1-1) limited New Paltz to two field goals in the final five minutes of the first half and used an 11-5 spurt during that time to build a 26-17 lead at the intermission.

The two teams traded baskets in the three minutes of the second half before Fredonia extended its lead to 32-21 with 15:30 remaining. The Hawks, who shot just 27 percent (15-of- 54) for the game, got as close as six, 33-27, on a basket by sophomore forward Tarah Norris (Port Jervis, NY) with 13:30 remaining. The Blue Devils however quickly pushed the lead back to 12 on a basket by Guenther and consecutive hoops by Crowley.

Sophomore guard Kim Wiegel (Whitestone, NY) was the high scorer for New Paltz with nine points. Norris added eight for the Hawks who are now 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the SUNYAC.
