Hawks Fall in Season Opener at Hartwick

ONEONTA, NY — The SUNY New Paltz men and women’s swimming and diving teams kicked off their seasons with a loss on the road to Hartwick College Saturday. The women’s team lost a close one 126-111 while the men lost 175-62.

Sophomore Danielle Lindner (Wantagh, NY) and freshman Joanna Masterson (Canandaigua, NY) led the Hawks on the day winning two individual events each. Lindner was first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.71) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.13) while Masterson placed first in the 50-yard freestyle (24.92) and 100-yard freestyle (55.78).

Lindner and Masterson also teamed up with sophomore Mallory Grempel (Babylon, NY) and senior Meghan O’Brien (New Rochelle, NY) to take first in the 200-yard medley relay (1:56.10).

Grempel was also the top finisher in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:14.04) and Soule was second in the 50-yard freestyle (25.83) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:44.20).

For the men, senior Jeff Galaise (Torrington, CT) claimed the Hawks lone first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (58.15) and placed second in the 200-yard individual medley (2:06.69).

In the 200-yard medley relay, the quartet of Kent Yeung (Flushing, NY), Jon Amoia (Williamsville, NY) Jon Sousa (Albany, NY), and Jay Sousa (Albany, NY) took second (1:41.28) and Mark Costello (Staten Island, NY), Todd Doornweerd (Meridan, CT), Jeff Melton (Acworth, GA) and Joe Davidson (Turnersville, NJ) placed second in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:34.54).
