NYU Surges Past Hawks in Second Half

NEW PALTZ — Junior defender Bari Schwartz (Staten Island, NY) scored the first of three second-half NYU goals to lead the Violets to a 3-0 win over SUNY New Paltz this afternoon in the season opener for both teams.

Schwartz’s goal was unassisted at the 58-minute mark and helped NYU raise its unbeaten streak to 13 games dating back to last season. The Violets, 13-5-1 in 2001, were unbeaten in their last 12 games and captured the ECAC Division III Women’s Metro Soccer Championship.

NYU extended its lead to 2-0 ten minutes later on an unassisted goal by freshman midfielder Kate Goldwater (Shorewood, WI). The Violets added another goal late in the second half when freshman midfielder Jackie Shaw (Harrisburg, PA) found freshman midfielder Jaclyn Thayer (Corona Del Mar, CA) who put the ball past SUNY New Paltz sophomore goalie Maggie Fenton (East Meadow, NY) at 72:40.

Despite being outshot 16-3, the Hawks missed an opportunity to go ahead midway through the first half when a penalty kick by sophomore midfielder Meredith Ventimiglia (Patchogue, NY) was stopped by NYU junior goalie Becca Giefer (Mahtomedi, MN).

Fenton stopped 10 shots for the Hawks who travel to Troy, NY on Wednesday night to play RPI. Giefer recorded three stops for NYU.
