Giufre Named Head Women’s Volleyball Coach

NEW PALTZ – — SUNY New Paltz Director of Athletics Stuart Robinson has announced the hiring of Matthew Giufre as the school’s new head women’s volleyball coach.

Giufre spent the last four years as the assistant women’s volleyball coach under Joan Sitterly at perennial national championship contender SUNY Cortland. During that time, the Red Dragons compiled an impressive 132-34 record and made four NCAA Division III Tournament appearances.

In 2001, Cortland went 29-13, captured their sixth straight SUNYAC title, and advanced to the New York regional semifinals in the NCAA Tournament.

Giufre is a 1998 graduate of Cortland with a degree in physical education. He earned his master’s degree in health education in 2002 from Cortland as well. As an undergraduate, he played four years of club volleyball and served as a team tri-captain during his senior season.

A native of Liverpool, NY, Giufre graduated from Liverpool High School in 1994. As a member of the Warriors’ volleyball team, he earned all-league honors and was named to the Exceptional Senior all-star squad.

The SUNY New Paltz women’s volleyball team will open the 2002 season on August 31 in a tournament at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY.
