NEW PALTZ — The SUNY New Paltz School of Business has received approval from SUNY Central Administration and the New York State Education Department to offer Bachelor of Science degree programs in finance, management, marketing, international business and general business beginning this summer.
“This will take the School of Business to a higher level and significantly improve our students’ chances in the job market,” said Dean Hadi Salavitabar in announcing the degree programs.
The new degree programs allow the School of Business to provide comprehensive education and training in specific areas. Rather than graduating with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, students will graduate with degrees clearly identifying their area of expertise, which will be of considerable value to prospective employers.
“Our graduates will be able to associate themselves with their area of study and seek positions in those areas,” Salavitabar said. “The educational training of our graduates will be more focused and comprehensive.”
The School of Business will now offer six majors for business students: accounting, finance, management, marketing, international business and general business. Additionally, the school offers the MBA with seven areas of concentration: accounting, the 150-credit licensure-qualifying program in public accountancy, finance, information and knowledge management, marketing, management and international business.
“I am pleased to see the School of Business moving in this direction,” said Interim President Steven Poskanzer. “This change reflects our continuing commitment on this campus to student needs and is a testament to the efforts of the School of Business to meet the needs of the region’s businesses.”
The School of Business, with more than 740 declared undergraduate majors and 21 full-time faculty, is one of the fastest-growing professional units at SUNY New Paltz. The School of Business plays an important role in the local, regional and international communities with valuable input from its Business Advisory Council.
“This change from concentrations to major degree programs will attract highly motivated students with definite career plans, which will provide even stronger personnel for businesses employing SUNY New Paltz graduates,” said Provost David Lavallee.
The new Bachelor of Science degrees along with the five-year combined Bachelor of Science/Master’s in Business Administration program in Accounting expands the business offerings available to students. The current Bachelor of Science in Business Administration will be phased out as existing students transfer into a new degree program or graduate from the college.
