Lacrosse Falls to Vassar On Senior Day

NEW PALTZ — The visiting Brewers from Vassar spoiled the celebration Tuesday as they defeated women’s lacrosse on Senior Day 10- 4. The game marked the final home game for seniors Kate Roussel (Staten Island, NY), Adrian Grasso (Oceanside, NY), and Katie Sharp (Mineola, NY).

Sharp opened the scoring for New Paltz tying the game at one with her 95th career goal at the 24:18 mark of the first half. Vassar took command the last twenty minutes though, tallying six straight times to end the half.

The Hawks, trailing 7-1 at the half, fought back to bring the game to 7-3 thanks to goals from Jillian Sheppard (Stony Brook, NY) and Mary Warren (Mineola, NY), and the amazing play of Adrian Grasso. The senior goalkeeper kept the Hawks in the game saving several point blank shots and shutting out the Brewers for almost twenty-three minutes in the second half. Vassar eventually broke Grasso with 7:53 left in the game and tallied twice more before Jackie Bunzel (Massapequa, NY) got the Hawks’ last goal. Grasso ended up with a season-high 25 saves in her last home contest.

At the conclusion of the match, head coach Heather Mackay praised the effort her team has given all season. “I am very proud of my players,” Mackay said. “We’ve had a lot of injuries and no substitutions which forced players to be in different positions.”

New Paltz will look to break the school record for wins in a season on Monday in their finale at Utica. Game time is scheduled for 4:00pm.
