Men’s Baseball Sweeps Marywood in Home Opener

NEW PALTZ, NY — Returning to Loren Campbell Field proved just what the Hawks needed as they begin their 28-game schedule in the Northeast. The Hawks swept visiting Marywood University, 7- 2, and 5-3 in running their home record to 26-4 over their last 30 home games.

John Buonamano (Royersford, PA) twirled a complete game five-hitter, recording nine strikeouts in game one, and helped his cause by hitting his second homerun of the season. Vinnie Perry (Kingston, NY) also homered in the game.

Game two saw the Hawks jump out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back as pitchers Paul Schropfer (Glen Oaks, NY) and Chris Schuon (Lake Katrine, NY) combined on a six-hitter. Offensively, sophomore Mike Bucco (Washingtonville, NY) led the Hawks hitting a double and his team-leading third homerun to help the Hawks improve to a 5-9 record.

Head coach Mike Juhl was pleased with his team’s performance on Sunday. “Once again, we put together all seven innings of solid baseball in both games,” he said. “It’s amazing how much better we play at home. I’m glad we have 21 home games this season.”

The Hawks will be in action Wednesday at Vassar College, and Thursday at home against SUNY Farmingdale before taking on longtime rival SUNY Cortland in the SUNYAC opener on Saturday. Saturday’s game will have a televised tape delay on channel 17.
