Baseball Forced to Settle For Tie

NEW PALTZ — The New Paltz men’s baseball team after coming back from three and four run deficits, ran out of light before they could gain the lead Thursday against Farmingdale. The game was called at the conclusion of the eighth inning due to darkness ending in an 8-8 tie.

Farmingdale erupted for four runs in the top of the second inning before New Paltz was able to gain even in the third. John Buonamano (Royersford, PA) started the rally off by doubling down the leftfield line. Ernesto Sosa (Santa Domingo, DR) walked and Jimmy Fisher (Bloomsbury, NJ) reached on a throwing error. All three Hawks managed to score in the inning, two of which coming from a two-RBI single from Randy Walters (Collierville, TN). In the top half of the fourth, the Rams came back with four more thanks to Edwin Genoa’s two-RBI single and a couple of costly walks and a wild pitch by Hawk pitchers. Down 8-4, New Paltz was forced to scratch its way back in the closing innings to tie the game. Mike Bucco (Washingtonville, NY) scored unearned in the 4th, Walters hit a solo shot in the 5th, and Paul Schropfer (Glen Oaks, NY) tied the score in the bottom of the 7th with a two-RBI double. Neither team mounted much of a threat in the eighth before the game was called.

John Miraldi (Denville, NJ) pitched the first 3 and 2/3 innings, giving up 6 runs on 3 hits. Rich Bezelia (Massapequa, NY) came on in relief, pitching 4 and 1/3 innings, giving up 2 runs on 6 hits while striking out 5.

Men’s baseball will be back in action Saturday against conference foe Cortland for a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.
