NEW PALTZ — The Business Institute of SUNY New Paltz School of Business, with the Center for Continuing and Professional Education and South-Western College Publishing, will present “Perilous Future?” a workshop on the future of accounting education featuring W. Steve Albrecht, Ph.D, this fall.
The workshop, scheduled for Nov. 2, will provide business and accounting educators and practitioners a forum to discuss crucial issues relating to the quantity and quality of accounting degree candidates and the broader business skills required for the accounting market.
Albrecht is the Arthur Andersen LLP Alumni Professor of Accounting and Associate Dean of the Marriott School at Brigham Young University. He is the author of “Accounting Education: Charting the Course through a Perilous Future” and has done extensive research on financial statement fraud, theft and fraud in corporations, white-collar crime, and accounting and business education. His work acknowledges the demands of a broad knowledge base for accounting professionals which challenges business schools to expand curriculum and raises the standard for students.
“This is the first of what should be continued dialogue among educators and practitioners regarding the expectations of the professional marketplace,” said SUNY New Paltz School of Business professor Rief Kanan. “Business school graduates should demonstrate breadth of knowledge and experience beyond the narrow definition of a college major or a licensure examination.”
Business school deans and faculty from several SUNY campuses and other institutions across the Hudson Valley, Western Connecticut and Northern New Jersey will attend the workshop. Accounting practitioners in the region are encouraged to participate in this workshop that is so important to the future of the profession. Workshop participants can receive 4 CPE credits.
