NEW PALTZ — New Paltz Summer Repertory Theatre announces auditions for its 27th anniversary season. Auditions will be held on Friday, April 27 at 7pm and Saturday, April 28 at 1pm. Those interested in auditioning should sign-in and register in the McKenna Theatre Lobby. Following are the plays included in the 27th Anniversary Season of New Paltz Summer Repertory Theatre.
Marisol
by José Rivera, Directed by Beverly Brumm, Performances: June 21-24,26-30, and July 1 in McKenna Theatre
José Rivera wrote Marisol in 1992. Subtitled ‘an apocalyptic fantasy,’ Marisol is most heavily influenced by a literary style known as “magical realism,” a genre found predominantly in Latin American fiction. The play is named after the central character, Marisol Perez, a young Puerto Rican woman living in the Bronx, who has moved away from her cultural roots, and is pursuing a career in publishing in upscale Manhattan. In this world, God is old and senile, and Marisol’s guardian angel, who has managed until now to protect her, has decided to leave and lead an insurrection to overthrow this God who has abdicated his responsibilities to mankind. When her guardian angel leaves her to go into battle, Marisol finds herself alone, abandoned and unprotected in the urban jungle of New York. The play touches on issues of environmental, moral, social, political and cultural decay in contemporary society. The writing is poetic, powerful, and imaginative.
Broadway Bound
by Neil Simon, Directed by John Wade, Performances: July 5-8,10-15 in Parker Theatre
In Broadway Bound we find Eugene, the narrator, and his brother Stanley struggling to break into show business-pulling all-nighters to come up with comedy sketches they hope to sell to CBS while their maladjusted family around them in Brooklyn copes with an emotional meltdown. Written in 1986, Broadway Bound is the final installment of Neil Simon’s autobiographical trilogy, which also includes Brighton Beach Memoirs, and Biloxi Blues.
Scapin
by Molière, Musical adaptation by Shelley Berc and Andrei Belgrader, Lyrics and Music by Rusty Magee, Directed by Stanton Davis, Performances: July 19-22, 24-29 Performed outdoors on the banks of the campus pond.
Scapin is a commedia dell’arte influenced farce derived from an old Roman play. The main character, Scapin, a scoundrel who is servant to the household of Geronte, is asked to intervene in the planned weddings of his master’s son and a neighbor’s son. The sons are in love with two penniless ladies who are considered bad matches by the parents of these would-be grooms. Scapin enlists the aid of his fellow servant Sylvester, and together they trick the parents into having the right children marry the right sweethearts while getting even with their masters in the process.
