Hawks Edged In Baseball Opener

FREDERICKSBURG, VA. — SUNY New Paltz was edged by undefeated Mary Washington in its season opener, 7-5, on Friday in Virginia.

The (0-1) Hawks got the strong hitting they expected right out of the chute, with nine hits off Mary Washington, a NCAA Tournament team last season.

Designated hitter John Buonamano led the offensive charge, going 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and two runs batted in. Shortstop Jeff Lackaye also contributed two hits, while Brian Clarke, Nich Vegeto, Vinnie Perry, Bryan Monti, and Randy Walters each had one hit.

The difference in the ballgame was five walks and a hit batter — four of which scored — by New Paltz pitchers. Freshman Dan Curci had the best outing for the Hawk hurlers, pitching the final 1 1/3 innings, giving up just one hit and striking out one. Batterymate Erik Nilsen threw out two runners attempting to steal.

New Paltz gets its chance for revenge tomorrow, with a 1 p.m. rematch against the (7-0) Eagles. There is also a chance that the Hawks will play Sunday’s scheduled game against St. Mary’s College on Saturday due to anticipated poor weather.
