On Thursday, March 29, 2001 SUNY New Paltz welcomes Nanette Salomon for a lecture in Lecture Center Room 102, beginning at 7:00 PM. The Art History Association, a member of the Student Association, sponsors this free event. The public is invited to attend.
Titled “Inventing the Early Modern Dirty Little Secret: The Eavesdroppers of Nicolaes Maes,” Salomon’s lecture examines the work of the 17th century Dutch painter. Maes was a pupil of Rembrandt, whose influence is apparent in Maes’ early work.
Salomon’s writing often focuses on the feminist interpretation of art: she has authored numerous works on the subject including From Sexuality to Civility: Vermeer’s Women, and sections of Naked Truths: Women, Sexuality and Gender in Classical Art and Archaeology. In her article on the female nude, “The Venus Pudica: Uncovering Art History’s Pernicious Pedigrees,” Salomon discusses the distinction between naked and nude, identifying the female figure as naked and the male figure as nude.
