Men’s Basketball Team Falls To Potsdam

NEW PALTZ — Three players in double figures was not enough for SUNY New Paltz to overcome a poor shooting night and a 14-point halftime deficit on Friday against Potsdam at Elting Gymnasium.

The Bears defeated New Paltz, 87-57, to move into sole possession of fifth place in the SUNYAC standings.

The game was scheduled to begin at 8 p.m., but started instead around 9:30 p.m. due to the wait for replacement referees to arrive to officiate the preceding women’s contest.

Matt Winter (11 points) hit three three-pointers to lead New Paltz (6-17 overall, 5-14 SUNYAC) in the scoring column. And Robert Jones (10 rebounds) and Dominick Fornabaio tallied 10 points apiece for the Hawks, while Sean Welsh and Dave Ott each scored six points. New Paltz shot just 30 percent (18-of-60) as a team in the contest.

Jon Guida (seven rebounds), meanwhile, led all scorers with 18 points for Potsdam (13-10 overall, 10-9 SUNYAC), and five other Bears scored at least nine points.

New Paltz can finish what has been a disappointing season on somewhat of a high note tomorrow, if senior forward Jones can get eight rebounds (he’s averaging 8.3 rpg) in the Hawks’ 4 p.m. finale against Plattsburgh. That would move him into second place ahead of Eric Bell (872 rebounds) on New Paltz’s all-time rebounding list. Ed Shuster (902 boards) is the Hawks’ all-time rebounding leader.
