Hawks Soar Into Playoffs

NEW PALTZ — SUNY New Paltz broke a 36-36 halftime tie early in the second period en route to winning its second straight game, 68-61, over Plattsburgh on Saturday afternoon at Elting Gymnasium.

Zebi Williams (16 points, 12 rebounds) led four Hawk starters in double figures. Lisa Burriss added 14 points, while Sonya Mkoloma (12 points, eight rebounds, five steals, four blocks) had another strong outing, and Britni Bishop chipped in 11 points and six steals for New Paltz (12-12 overall, 9-11 SUNYAC).

The win created a three-way tie for the sixth-best record in the final SUNYAC standings. After applying the conference tiebreaker criteria, Brockport (10-14) will be seeded sixth for next week’s SUNYAC Tournament, with New Paltz seventh, and Plattsburgh (12-12) eighth.

Meanwhile, a coin flip was needed to break a first-place tie between Cortland and Oneonta for the top spot. Oneonta won the toss, so New Paltz will play second-seeded Cortland at 6 p.m. in Wednesday’s quarterfinals at Utica Memorial Auditorium.
