Men’s Basketball Team Shocks Nationally Ranked Cortland

NEW PALTZ — SUNY New Paltz won for the first time since Dec. 9, and snapped nationally ranked Cortland’s nine-game win streak, with a 62-60 come-from-behind victory on Saturday night at Elting Gymnasium.

It was just the second loss of the season for the (10-2 overall, 7-2 SUNYAC) Red Dragons, ranked 17th in Division III. Their only other loss came in their second game, 78-61 to Oneonta, 45 days ago on Nov. 28.

Robert Jones (six blocks, three rebounds) led three players in double figures for the Hawks, which shot 60 percent in the second half, and were nearly 53 percent accurate for the game. And it was that same man, Jones, who broke a 60-60 tie with two made free throws in the waning seconds to secure the victory for New Paltz (4-9 overall, 3-7 SUNYAC).

The Hawks don’t play again until next Saturday, when they travel to Oswego for an 8 p.m. SUNYAC contest.
