Women’s Basketball Team Evens Record With Victory Over Local Rival

NEW PALTZ — New Paltz shot nearly 59 percent in the second half to expand a two-point halftime advantage to a more comfortable 70-56 final margin over local rival Mount St. Mary on Tuesday night at Elting Gymnasium.

Freshman Maura McShane scored a game-high 22 points, and added seven steals, five assists and four rebounds for the (1-1) Hawks, which lost to the previously unbeaten Blue Knights, 76-46, last year.

New Paltz had its second straight strong effort to start the season, with six players scoring seven or more points in the contest. Freshman point guard Britni Bishop (four assists) was the only other Hawk in double figures with 12 points.

Lisa Malecki (17 points) and Mary Kurnat (13 points, nine rebounds) led Mount St. Mary (3-1), which shot 50 percent (10-of-20) in the first half, but connected on just 24 percent (8-of-33) of its shots in the second half.

The Hawks open their SUNYAC schedule this weekend on the road. On Friday, New Paltz faces Brockport at 6 p.m., and then travels to Geneseo for a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee.
