New Paltz Defeats Knights In Men’s Soccer

NEW PALTZ — Freshman Mario Lavacca followed Wednesday’s three-goal performance with just one goal on Saturday for SUNY New Paltz, but it was the only goal that mattered in a 1-0 win over local rival Mount St. Mary.

It was Lavacca’s fifth goal in his last seven games for New Paltz (5-12), which has won two consecutive games.

New Paltz dominated the play, holding 11-3 and 11-5 advantages in shots and corner kicks, respectively.

Fellow Hawk freshman Michael Vaughan-Cherubin made two saves in goal to record his second straight shutout. Meanwhile, Bill Tate made three saves to help keep the (6-8-1) Blue Knights close.

New Paltz plays another local team – Vassar – at 3 p.m. on Wednesday in Poughkeepsie, before closing the season next Saturday with a 2 p.m. home match against Keuka.
