NEW PALTZ — “Making Tracks in the New Millennium” is the theme of Homecoming/Alumni Weekend 2000, to be held on the SUNY New Paltz campus October 13 through 15. This year’s event will incorporate Alumni Reunion Weekend and Parents Weekend, and include activities for alumni, students, and the parents and families of freshmen.
Detailed information about the many exciting activities planned for the autumn weekend can be found on the SUNY New Paltz web site at http://www.newpaltz.edu/homecoming. Online registration materials, area lodging information, and highlights from past homecomings are also provided at the site.
Homecoming/Alumni Weekend 2000 also gives the university an opportune time to introduce campus visitors to a new sculpture, “The Flame of Wisdom,” which was installed in September just outside Resnick Engineering Hall, at the building’s southeast corner. A celebration of the installation will be held at 5 p.m. on Friday.
The stainless steel sculpture was created by internationally renowned artist Leonardo Nierman of San Angel, Mexico. A gift to the SUNY New Paltz Foundation by generous donor Henry Hirsch of Garden Grove, Calif., enabled the university to purchase it.
Friday’s activities also include a Scholarship Golf Tournament with former golf coach Doug Sheppard, which begins at 4 p.m. Proceeds will support student scholarships.
Among the many activities planned for Saturday will be historical and campus tours led by art history professor William Rhoads, which depart from the Haggerty Plaza on the half hour between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.; a noon barbecue on the Old Main Quad which will be followed by a fair and field festival; an alumni swim meet, women’s volleyball game, and both women’s and men’s soccer games; a 5 p.m. All Campus Reception in the Student Union Purple Lounge; reunion dinners for the graduating class of ’75, ’80, ’85, and ’90; a 6 p.m. family banquet with live jazz music in the Student Union MultiPurpose Room; and an 8 p.m. performance by comedian Steven Wright in Julien J. Studley Theatre.
The School of Business, School of Physical Science & Engineering, and School of Education are also hosting activities for alumni on Saturday.
On Sunday, there will be a First World Alumni Brunch & Business Meeting from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the Terrace Restaurant; and women’s and men’s soccer alumni matches will take place on the campus soccer field at 11 a.m. and noon, respectively.
