Hawk Runners Excel At N.Y.U. Invite

BRONX — The SUNY New Paltz men’s cross-country team beat a number of Division II schools, en route to a 12th place finish among more than 40 teams competing at the New York University Invitational on Saturday at Van Cortlandt Park.

Meanwhile, the Hawk women placed 26th of 37 complete teams at the meet.

Sophomore Phil Goodwin (27:40) was once again New Paltz’s top finisher in 45th place, while Matt Brown (27:53) was not far behind time-wise in 57th. Other men’s finishers included Chris Tuttle (89th, 28:30), Justin Lee (95th, 28:35), Corey Crawford (118th, 28:57), Greg Sautner (156th, 29:57) and Shawn Roth (167th, 30:27).

On the women’s side, freshman Rebecca Demeri (137th, 22:09) was the top New Paltz finisher for the third straight week, while Crista Szymanski (145th, 22:22), Kristi Markwalter (146th, 22:23), Alison Tracy (154th, 22:41), Dawson Gerhardt (162nd, 23:03) and Cheryl Yanek (171st, 23:32) also completed the race.

The Hawks are at Brockport at 12 p.m. next Saturday, before hosting their first home meet in seven years – the Hawk Harrier Classic – on October 7.
