NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz Spring Concert Series culminates with a performance by The College-Youth Symphony of the Hudson Valley on Sunday, May 14th in the Julien J. Studley Theatre. Dr. Carole Cowan directs the College-Youth Symphony, which consists of 85 musicians from SUNY New Paltz and high schools throughout the Hudson Valley. The program will include works by Bach, Copland and Brahms. Featured soloist is violinist Tristan Zukowski, winner of the 2000 College~Youth Symphony Concerto Competition. He will perform the first movement of the Mendelssohn “Violin Concerto in E minor.” The Sunday evening concert begins at 7pm and tickets will be available at the door one hour prior to the event.
Tristan Zukowski, a sophomore at Our Lady of Lourdes High School started playing the violin at the age of three. In addition to this most recent honor, Mr. Zukowski is also a past winner of the Woodstock Chamber Orchestra’s Bach Competition and the College~Youth Symphony Virtuoso-In-Progress Competition. At age 14, he was guest soloist with the West Point Military Academy Band after winning their Young Artist’s Solo Competition. This year, he returns to West Point to continue his engagement with the Military Academy Band. Mr. Zukowski is also the concertmaster of the College-Youth Symphony of the Hudson Valley.
In addition to the Mendelssohn “Violin Concerto in E minor,” the orchestra will perform Aaron Copland’s “Outdoor Overture” and “Toccata and Fugue in D minor” by Bach and Stokowski. The allegro movement from Brahms’ “2nd Symphony” rounds out the program. Student chamber ensembles will be interspersed between works for full orchestra. Tickets for the performance are $5 for adult admission, $4 for senior citizen admission, and $3 for student admission.
