The Oracle Grabs Award For Excellence

NEW PALTZ — The SUNY New Paltz campus newspaper, The Oracle, won third place honors for overall excellence in a national contest of the Society for Collegiate Journalists the nation’s oldest honor society for students of mass communication, according to Shelly Wright, a lecturer in the university’s Journalism Program.

“This is an affirmation of the hard work students put into the campus newspaper,” she said.

The honor recognizes The Oracle’s excellence in the spring and fall semesters of 1999. Editor during the former semester was junior Josh Anderson, also the current editor. During the latter semester, the newspaper was edited by senior Dennis Reardon.

The award was given at the spring convention of College Media Advisors in conjunction with the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, which took place in early March at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Times Square.

The Oracle won this award judged by professional journalists as a first-time entry. Comments provided by the judge for overall excellence in the student newspaper category told Oracle staff, “You’re headed very much in the right direction. I feel if I were a SUNY New Paltz student, I’d need to read you.”
