NEW PALTZ — Hawks Lose Men’s Tennis Opener
NEW PALTZ – Two singles wins and a doubles victory weren’t nearly enough, as SUNY New Paltz opened its men’s tennis season with a 6-3 home loss to the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday at the New Paltz Air Structure. The (0-1) Hawks received strong play from senior captain Justin Jourden (Woodstock, NY/Kingston ’94), who defeated Bernard Deysson at first singles, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. Earlier in the day, he and partner Chris Knoblauch had been edged by Justin Crawford and Todd Stallings, 8-6, in second doubles. Senior Josh Elohim (Mount Tremper, NY/Onteora ’95) had the Hawks’ other singles win, beating Shawna Stallings in straight sets (6-1, 6-1) at fifth singles, while the first doubles team of freshman Tiberiu Taran and sophomore Ed Paulinski beat the (4-0) Mariners’ Deysson and Zachary Mouton, 8-6. New Paltz is at C.C.N.Y. for a 3:30 p.m. match on Monday.
