Women’s Basketball Falls To Oneonta

NEW PALTZ — Robin Shields scored 20 points to inch closer to 1,000 career points and Lisa Burriss grabbed 14 rebounds, but New Paltz still fell to visiting Oneonta, 66-44, on Saturday afternoon at Elting Gymansium.

The loss snapped a stretch over which New Paltz (2-13) had collected two victories in its last three games.

Shields now needs just 35 points over the Hawks’ final nine regular season contests to become just the second New Paltz women’s basketball player to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Jasmine Sanchez (1,066 career points) was the first last season.

Paula Polce led the Red Dragons with 17 points and nine rebounds, with Oneonta as a team shooting just under 50 percent from the field in the game.

New Paltz looks to get back on the winning track with a game at Utica/Rome at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. The Hawks beat the Wildcats 68-61 in their earlier meeting on January 14 at Elting Gymnasium.
