Men’s Basketball Edged In Opener

GREENVILLE, PA. — The SUNY New Paltz men’s basketball team opened its 1999-2000 season with a one-point loss, 75-74, to host Thiel College at the Greenville Tip-Off Classic.

New Paltz (0-1) had four players score in double figures, but shot just 38 percent as a team, while Thiel converted just 39 percent of its shots.

Mac Cavanaugh (20 points, including four three-pointers) and Robert Jones (15 points, 11 rebounds) led the offense, while Omar Bennett (four rebounds, two assists) and Demetrios Tsimis (six blocks, six rebounds) had 12 points apiece.

New Paltz will take on the loser of Friday’s Baldwin-Wallace/Penn State-Altoona matchup in Saturday’s 1 p.m. consolation final.
