Women’s Soccer Team Defeats Defending SUNYAC Champ

NEW PALTZ — Corinne Caufield’s goal at 40:46 of the first half was the difference in the game as New Paltz defeated 1998 SUNYAC Champion Plattsburgh, 1-0, in women’s soccer on Friday at Alumni Field.

Caufield, a freshman reserve from Brentwood, chipped a ball over goalkeeper Erin Shaw four minutes before halftime for her first collegiate goal, which also proved to be the game-winner.

After the game, an elated Hawks squad mobbed Head Coach Colleen Bruley, who played goal for Plattsburgh for two years (1989-90), including her senior season for current Cardinal Coach Karen Wiley.

“It was an outstanding effort by everyone,” a visibly excited Bruley said after the win. “Erin Scherf was very strong at the back, and our substitutions (Lindsay Martin and Corinne Caufield) did an excellent job off the bench.”

New Paltz, which is off to its best start in school history, next hosts Potsdam at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Bears were shut out by nationally ranked Oneonta, 5-0, on Friday.
