Men’s Soccer Team Gets Elusive Win

POTSDAM — New Paltz finally got its first win of the season, 2-1 in overtime, over Potsdam in its SUNYAC opener.

Chris Knoblauch scored on an assist from Stephen Ferrara 1:30 into the first overtime period to end New Paltz’s (1-4-1 overall, 1-0-0 SUNYAC) winless streak.

Like Wednesday’s 1-1 tie at home with the College of New Jersey, New Paltz scored first, but the contest was later tied. Former Onteora High star Orah Elohim scored unassisted in the 19th minute for the Hawks.

But Mike Miklic converted a pass from Rob Szmarz at 49:43, to tie the game for Potsdam, where it remained until Knoblauch’s tally 42 minutes later.

Kevin Smith collected four saves in preserving the win for New Paltz (1-4-1 overall, 1-0-0 SUNYAC) which now goes back to Plattsburgh for a 1 p.m. match tomorrow, after being rained out there on Friday. Earlier today, Plattsburgh throttled Utica/Rome at home, 10-0.
