Hawks Unlucky In Loss

NORTH ADAMS, MASS. — One ball went in off the crossbar and one went in off the goalkeeper as New Paltz lost to the host Hawks, 2-0, to remain winless in men’s soccer action Saturday at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts/United Way Tournament.

Jamie Cielilk banked a pass from Eddie Pirez off the crossbar and into the goal in the 33rd minute. Then in the 64th minute, New Paltz was unlucky again, as goalkeeper Kevin Smith got a piece of Dave Warren’s shot before it trickled past him into the goal.

New Paltz was edged on shots, 11-10, and corner kicks, 2-1. Smith made nine saves in the losing effort, while counterpart Aaron Majka stopped eight shots for Massachusetts College.

The Hawks will take on Drew University tomorrow at 1 p.m. on the second day of the two-day tournament. The Rangers, who lost 2-1 in overtime to Plattsburgh on Saturday, will meet New Paltz for the first time since edging the Hawks, 1-0, in the 1997 ECAC Metro New York/New Jersey Soccer Tournament.
