NEW PALTZ — Tom Davis, professor of philosophy and English at Ulster County Community College, will lecture on “Science, Religion and the ‘New’ Philosophy: Taking the Middle Path between the Age of Rocks and the Rock of Ages,” when he speaks to the Philosophy Club at the State University of New York at New Paltz on Wednesday, April 21. The 5 p.m. lecture in Jacobson Faculty Tower room 1010, will be open to the public.
Davis has master’s degrees in American studies, from Seton Hall University, and in philosophy, from SUNY Albany. Prior to his appointment at UCCC, in 1980, Davis taught at Rowan College and Rutgers University. In 1995, Davis was awarded the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching from the State University of New York.
Davis notes that his lecture draws on a view of philosophy implicit in American pragmatic tradition and will focus on four evolutionary levels: matter, life, mind and spirit. “Each of these,” states Davis, “will provide a matrix from which philosophy can negotiate a ‘creative tension’ between science and religion.”
