NEW PALTZ — Registration is underway for Summer Session 1999 at the State University of New York at New Paltz. New Paltz will offer more than 200 undergraduate and graduate courses, on and off campus, during the day and the evening. Formal admission to the college is not required in order to take summer courses.
Among the many choices are opportunities to study abroad, learn a foreign language, investigate regional history, improve your technological skills, or to participate in numerous cultural endeavors.
New Paltz offers two types of international travel experiences: those which focus on a special topic and those which concentrate on language and cultural learning. Among the many study abroad programs being offered this summer are a photography workshop in Greece; piano instruction in London; on-site studies in Rome, Naples, and Pompeii, Italy; instruction in modern dance in Urbino, Italy; and the study of the ecosystem of northern and central Australia. Additional programs are offered in Paris, France; Asturias and Andalucia, Spain; Guayaquil, Ecuador; Copenhagen, Denmark; Athens, Greece; England; the Virgin Islands; and el Camino de Santiago in northern Spain.
Whether learning a foreign language for pleasure, planned travel, or business purposes, SUNY New Paltz offers a highly successful, intensive Language Immersion program, geared specifically to each individual’s current level of knowledge, beginner through advanced. Classes are small and sessions are offered on the weekend or for two weeks during the summer.
Summer courses also provide an opportunity to learn more about the region, by enrolling in courses such as, “Hudson River Studies,” taught in conjunction with Clearwater, Inc.; “Huguenot Street-A Living History”; and the “Archaeological Field School,” which involves the excavation of a major prehistoric site in Ulster County.
There are also cultural possibilities throughout the summer, among them are the New Paltz Summer Repertory Theatre, which will celebrate its 25th anniversary season this year; the National Guitar Summer Workshop; the Bell Canto Opera Institute; and the Piano Institute and Festival with world-renowned pianist Vladimir Feltsman.
For teachers, the campus offers many education courses as well as several special programs. “Process Pedagogy: The Arts as Education,” is a two-week model of education employed by the National Dance Institute and taught by NDI’s founder, Jacques D’Amboise, its artistic director, Ellen Weinstein, and SUNY New Paltz professor, Nancy Gropper. Another offering, the “Reading & Writing Institute,” is a four-week program for kindergarten through college teachers who have an interest in using their experience as readers and writers to develop effective classroom projects and teaching strategies. “The Classroom Technology Institute” is a hands-on course designed to provide technology training courses for kindergarten through twelfth grade teachers.
