NEW PALTZ — Singer and songwriter Alix Dobkin will make a return appearance to Ulster County when she performs on Friday, March 12 in Parker Theater at the State University of New York at New Paltz. Dobkin, who currently lives in San Francisco, has been described as the original “minstrel figure” for the lesbian movement.
As a civil rights activist and one of the founders of the lesbian feminist movement, Dobkin feels she can fight oppression and hatred first hand using her most powerful weapon: music. Dobkin says she utilizes her voice to pave the way for future generations.
“My mission in life, Dobkin says, “is to talk about what it means to be a lesbian, and to approach my life, my world and my consciousness with a lesbian perspective.” She states that, through her travels, she hopes to let women everywhere “know that they can love women.”
Dobkin, who has been performing for nearly 30 years, has released six albums. Her latest CD, “Living with Lavender Jane,” combines two of her earlier recordings, “Living with Lesbians” and “Lavender Jane Loves Women.” There is no charge for the 8 p.m. concert which is supported by the Student Association; Social Change for Women, a student organization; and the Women’s Studies Program.
