NEW PALTZ — Nicholas Wolterstorff, internationally-known philosopher of religion and Noah Porter Professor of Philosophical Theology at the Yale Divinity School, will speak at the State University of New York at New Paltz on Monday, October 26. Wolterstorff is also an adjunct professor of philosophy as well as religious studies at Yale University. His topic is “Is Religious Belief Intellectually Responsible?”
Prior to his appointment at Yale Divinity School, Wolterstorff taught for 30 years in the philosophy department at Calvin College. He has also taught at Princeton University, the Free University of Amsterdam, the University of Michigan, the University of Texas and Notre Dame University. He is the past president of the American Philosophical Association and of the Society for Christian Philosophers. In 1993, he delivered the Wilde Lectures at Oxford University; in 1995, the Gifford Lectures at St. Andrews University; and, in 1988, the Stone Lectures at Princeton Seminary.
Wolterstorff has published in the fields of metaphysics, aesthetics, epistemology, and philosophy of religion, and is the author of more than 10 books and 200 articles in these fields. His most recent book in philosophy of religion is Divine Discourse, published by Cambridge University Press. Another recent book by Wolterstorff is John Locke and the Ethics of Belief, also published by Cambridge University Press.
The 5:00 p.m. lecture, sponsored by the Philosophy Club and the department of philosophy, will be held in Jacobson Faculty Tower. The program is supported by the College at New Paltz Foundation. There will be light refreshments prior to the lecture, at 4:45 p.m.
