NEW PALTZ — Sandra L. Landron, a second semester senior at the State University of New York at New Paltz and a student aide in the College’s Financial Aid Office, has been named the first recipient of the SUNY Financial Aid Professionals Scholarship award. Landron, who is from Staten Island, was nominated by the College’s Financial Aid staff and recommended to the state-wide selection committee based upon her personal essay, work ethic, and financial need.
During the summer of 1998, Landron worked as an intern in Washington D.C. for the national Coalition of Hispanic Health and Human Services Organizations (COSSMHO). COSSMHO is a national, not-for-profit organization dedicated to serving the Hispanic community in a wide range of health issues. While there, Landron worked in the Policy and Research Division analyzing existing policies which affect the Latino population, as well as assisting in the development of new policies specifically designed to serve Hispanics. During her internship, she had the opportunity to attend several White House briefings in which issues of Hispanic health and human services were discussed, including one in which she met President Bill Clinton.
Landron will graduate with a double major, in English and psychology. After attending law school, beginning in the fall of 1999, she plans a career in public policy.
