NEW PALTZ ART PROFESSOR RECEIVES TIFFANY FOUNDATION AWARD

NEW PALTZ — Myra Mimlitsch Gray, a faculty member at the State University of New York at New Paltz, has been selected as one of 21 artists chosen by the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation to receive a $20,000 grant. She was selected from a pool of approximately 300 artists from across the country.

Mimlitsch Gray, a highly accomplished metalsmith and a member of the Art Department faculty since 1993, was recognized by the Tiffany Foundation for her unique talent and individual artistic strength. Her hollowware, which encompasses a broad range of styles and techniques, addresses the social function of traditional tableware and its role as social portraiture.

A Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Grant is one of the most prestigious awards an artist can receive. The awards go to artists whose work shows promise, but who have not received widespread critical or commercial recognition.

Mimlitsch Gray received her undergraduate degree in fine arts from the Philadelphia College of Art in 1984 and her master’s degree in fine arts in metalsmithing from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan in 1986. Works by the New Paltz Faculty member are in private collections and have been included in numerous exhibitions. She is the recipient of many awards and fellowships including a National Endowment for the Arts Artist Fellowship in 1994 and an Arts Midwest/National Endowment for the Visual Arts Fellowship in 1991.
