home Memoir Choosing to Stay in the United States

Choosing to Stay in the United States

By Ruby Do ’20 (Visual Arts)

My personal experience this spring due to COVID-19 really changed my experience as an international student studying in America. I had to decide between going home only two months before graduation or staying in America to see what would happen after I graduate. I don’t know what will happen, but I hope I’ll be able to get some work experiences in America before moving back home. When SUNY New Paltz decided to move classes online I moved out of my dorm, too. I never thought I would move out of New Paltz so quickly. Everything was very overwhelming for everyone at that moment.

I think I’m just starting to get used to remote learning. At the beginning, I thought it would be a simple task, but turns out it is quite challenging. I found that it was easy for me to forget something if I don’t have to show up in person. Something I do every day is that I change into clothes that I would go out in to motivate me to do work and feel “normal.

What I miss most about campus is spring! I’m really sad that I’m missing all of the flowers blooming on campus. Spring is my favorite season after moving to New Paltz because it’s a beautiful season to experience. Fall is up there too, of course! Another thing I miss about campus is seeing everyone I know, not just friends but professors and staff.
