On Friday, November 8, at the Center for Teaching and Learning, Dr. Brian Thoms, Professor of Information Management at SUNY Farmingdale, will give a presentation on his current research which examines the role of new media in interactive learning environments. In his presentation, Dr. Thoms will discuss his research on Using Social Media to Support Learning in Online and Blended Learning Environments. Dr. Thoms’ abstract is as follows:
In this research we present a new design component for online learning communities (OLC); one that integrates Twitter with an online discussion board. We introduce our design across two sections of upper-division information system courses at a university located within the U.S.The first section consisted of full-time online learners, while the second section met face-to-face twice a week. Guided by a working theoretical model for how individuals learn and interact within OCLs, we measure student perceptions of learning, social interaction and course community before and after our intervention. Initial findings are largely positive. While differences emerged across our populations, both experienced high levels of learning, interaction and community.
The session will begin at 11:30. Lunch will be served; please RSVP to Richard Kelder (firstname.lastname@example.org) by November 1st.
