SUNY New Paltz partners with NAUC to help improve student reading performance

SUNY New Paltz, along with the Newburgh Enlarged City School District and Mount St. Mary College, have partnered with the Newburgh Armory Unity Center (NAUC) to help improve reading performance for Newburgh students.

The goal of this partnership, known as LEAP (Literacy Education Advocacy Partnership), is to evaluate reading levels of Newburgh school students and provide individual and small group instruction to contribute to reading success.

“This collaborative project is a wonderful example of how multiple stakeholders can work together to address community and college needs in a comprehensive and systematic fashion,” said Michael Rosenbergh, dean of the School of Education. “All of us at SUNY New Paltz are excited that we can contribute to this innovative and dynamic partnership. We anticipate that our combined efforts will result in rich field experiences for graduate students, relevant professional development for practicing teachers, and, most importantly, significant gains in reading performance among Newburgh students.”

NAUC will hold a ribbon cutting and reception on June 28, at 11 a.m., to celebrate the grand opening of its state-of-the-art Literacy Center where individual and group instruction will be held. The ribbon cutting will include refreshments and tours of the facility. It will be held at 321 South William Street. On and off street parking is available.
